AN OPEN LETTER TO THE PUBLIC
January 2005
It has recently come to the attention of the Philippine Nurses Association of the United Kingdom (PNA-UK) certain events, issues and propaganda about other matters that the PNA-UK itself has not endorsed and authorized. Furthermore, the irresponsible and unauthorized use of the Association’s name by certain groups and establishments have been taken for granted and have been used time and again for self-serving needs.
The Association’s phenomenal growth and success in such a short span of time has been capitalized by unauthorized entities to serve their individual needs and interests. The illicit use the Association’s name, its policies, and objectives by these unauthorized groups to attract patrons and business entities have been viewed by the Association and its members as an outright violation of the Association’s established mandate. As the Professional Association of Filipino Nurses in the UK, PNA-UK would like to re-iterate the following:
- The Philippine Nurses Association of United Kingdom (PNA-UK) is a non-profit professional Organization of Filipino Nurses in the United Kingdom.
- The Association was created in response to the growing number of Filipino Nurses in the United Kingdom.
- The Association’s main objective is to unite the different bodies, groups, organizations and associations of Filipino Nurses in the United Kingdom and Ireland.
- The Association aims to establish a harmonized body of Filipino Nurses within the United Kingdom.
As the professional association that aims to unite the Filipino Nurses community and serve as its voice, the PNA-UK is disturbed by this selfish behavior and is working to better the situation. We therefore politely request business establishments and other organizations, societies, associations or groups to restrain yourself from using the Association’s good reputation and position to further your own interests provided you have been granted approval to use such. A simple Letter of Request or Coordination is all we expect from you. However, a letter of request or coordination does not automatically guarantee the use of the association’s name and good standing. PNA-UK is flexible and as long as we are kept informed, matters can be sorted out. Improving the quality of life and working conditions of Filipino Nurses in the UK is a PNA-UK priority.
The PNA-UK, having been granted by the PNA National Head Office Philippines the temporary accreditation and recognition status of being the ONLY authorized Professional Nursing Organization of Filipino Nurses in the United Kingdom, would also like to make the public aware of the following:
- No other Filipino Nursing group, association, society, organization or otherwise is recognized and accredited by the PNA National Office in Manila, Philippines except PNA-UK and its accredited local chapters;
- PNA-UK will only recognize local Filipino Nursing organizations, associations, society or groups who have duly accredited themselves with PNA-UK. Accredited local PNA-UK chapters maintain their association’s individuality, interest, objectives and aims whilst in accordance with the main objectives, vision and mission of the PNA-UK. Accreditation is a simple process of signifying intent. Please email or call for details;
- Any official and authorized activity, event or participation of PNA-UK, both independently and in coordination with any organization, association, society and group will be announced in the Association’s official newsletter, website and e-circulation. Any event or activity not listed or endorsed by PNA-UK in its official circulation is not PNA-UK related.
Now, more than ever, when the Filipino Nurse is experiencing constant challenges from other Overseas Registered International Nurses, it is important to unite and stand as one solid body of Professional Filipino Nurses under the PNA-UK and the principles it embodies. The existence of PNA-UK has been a defining value for Filipino Nurses, reflective of a tender, loving, caring and just society. We cannot let selfish interests and destruction dominate the international reputation we all have gained through the quality of nursing care we provide.
PNA-UK, on behalf of its membership, has long supported the UK National Health Service. As the Professional Organization in the UK of Filipino nurses, PNA-UK will continue to promote the development of the profession to ensure nurses are prepared to provide the highest quality of care for the United Kingdom (and Ireland) now and in the future.
PNA-UK has no doubt that with everyone's help and contribution, we can effectively channel and attend to the needs of more pressing local, national and international issues other than local selfish interests.
We thank those of you who read this letter in an effort to better understand PNA-UK’s position and stand in regard to the current foregoing. We invite your comments and questions to us at secretariat@pna-uk.org. Regardless of the profound differences in our perspectives, PNA-UK on behalf of its members and the Filipino Nurses, remain open in the pursuit of common commitment to provide optimal health care service.
On Behalf of the Members and Associates of the Philippine Nurses Association of United Kingdom (PNA-UK) we remain,
Respectfully,
(SGD.) MICHAEL DUQUE, RN
